Buses

The Cotacachi bus terminal is located on 10 de Agosto and Morales behind the Mercado. Buses to Otavalo and Ibarra leave every 10 – 15 minutes daily from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm and are $0.35 and $0.50 respectively. The buses are clean and comfortable, however they may or may not have air conditioning, but they usually have windows that open. The buses have signs with their destination in the front windshield. Signs indicating “por la pana” are the faster buses that take the Pan-American Highway as opposed to the back roads.

Rental Cars

Rental cars are easily booked online in Ecuador similar to any other country and many of the same rental car companies are available, such as Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, Hertz and National. As with any other rental services, you should have do a thorough pre-rental inspection of the vehicle (with photos) as will the better rental car agencies. Driving in Ecuador is similar to driving in the U.S. and other countries, however it is always recommended to drive with caution and care when visiting another country. Ecuador has many well maintained highways and roads, but also has some smaller roads that may be in disrepair.

Purchasing a Vehicle

If you prefer not to rely on public transportation, purchasing and owning a vehicle in Ecuador is similar to that in the U.S. There are many car dealerships (mostly in Otavalo and Ibarra) that offer used and new cars in a wide variety of brands. Car ownership requires yearly registration, inspection, and understanding the traffic laws. A driver’s license must be obtained to drive in Ecuador after a maximum of three months stay in the country.

As is the norm any where in the world, use caution and “buyer beware” when purchasing used cars as they are not required to present any information regarding the car at the dealership, including if the ownership title is clear and free from any traffic violations. If opting for a new car, the sales representatives at the dealerships can also assist with insurance, theft prevention, and warranty and service solutions.

Ecuador has many car service and repair options which are much more affordable than in the U.S., although new car prices are a bit higher. The price is normally inclusive of taxes, first year registration (for a new car), title, and fees, however, most sales representatives do not “haggle” over price as in the U.S. The sticker price is the price you will pay unless you purcahse during a “sale” event where you can possible get a 2% – 5% discount.
