San Pablo Lake is located approximately 30 minutes from Cotacachi. The lake is one of the largest in Ecuador and is a popular tourist destination because of the beauty of the surrounding mountains, landscape and placid lake conditions.
San Pablo Lake is home to some aquatic bird species such as herons, ducks and koots. It also serves as a resting place for migrating birds and is a great birding destination. The lake occupies a tectonic grave almost 4 kilometers long and about 3 kilometers wide, and is fed by the small Itambi River and numerous underground slopes.
Recreational activities include: boating, sailing, paddle boarding, fishing, windsurfing, hiking, biking, kayaking and canoeing and riding horses. There are numerous accommodations and restaurants as well as an aquatic park.
