A short 20 minute drive from Cotacachi, Otavalo is best known for its Saturday market scene. The city has South America’s largest indigenous market and most of the city center is transformed into an outdoor market on Saturdays. There is also a smaller version of the market that takes place on Wednesdays. Hours are from 7am to 6pm.
The Plaza de los Ponchos is open daily and serves as an open air market to locals and tourists alike. Otavalo’s Animal Market is also a tourist attraction. Located outside the city center near the Yana Yacu pools, the animal market boasts livestock, dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, chickens, ducks, and guinea pigs.
